I can't comment on karmic because I'm not running it. I'm now running
KDE4.3 on Jaunty from the PPA, with
avidemux-qt:
Installed: 1:2.4.4-0.0ubuntu1

In this version I can disable the 'aside preview' in the open dialog
which allows me to use avidemux-qt. If I have the aside preview enabled,
it plays a preview of the selected video file for a couple of seconds
and then freezes.
