You could use one account, but you certainly don't have to. Also, I'm not sure how well the clients on the other end deal with it. The protocol isn't exactly the same for both services either, so not all "features"/behavior are unified.
Anyway, I've never heard of Gaim doing this automatically. If you added them twice, you'd see them twice. Since you said you didn't do that, I'm not sure what happened...
