Same issue on 2.6.28-15-generic (x64_64).
System is a Lenovo Thinkpad R500.

The issue appears a bit after boot. Grepping kern.log and kern.log*.gz
shows it happens between 18 minutes after boot and 16 hours after boot
(in that case the system had been suspended most of the time). Sometimes
the issue doesn't show up at all, but I often can't have the computer on
for very long. The slowdown seems to take quite a long time to happen,
often 10 or 20 minutes between each message. Due to needing to use the
laptop I have rebooted the system before it reached the "freeze" point.

Haven't yet tried any of the listed workarounds.
