Trying and testing is perfectly fine, and in fact it is a good way to
learn. The reason I asked is to see if you actually updated your kernel
after all with no problems.

I strongly suggest to try an update in either one of these two methods:

1. Open the terminal and type:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

2. Open System -> Administration -> Update Manager
Do a reload ("Check" button, if you are using an English localization)
once and if the updates are available select "Install updates".

Let me know how it goes. Thanks.
