Thanks Bryce.  Is there a reason DX9 on WinXP doesn't suffer from this
hardware limitation?

Dave's comment is correct - 2048 is a hardware limit for DRI on the 915.

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

2.6.31-rc6 release notes say i915 now enabled for resolutions up to 4096^2.  
But error in Xorg.log remains:
(EE) intel(0): Cannot support DRI with frame buffer width > 2048.

I'm using drivers from xorg-edgers PPA
