I have just found a solution which works for my AMD 64 system and got
skype working.

I extracted the libs folder from the deb file Raphael mentioned above
with ARK and then copied the contents to /libs 32 under root.

It seems the standard reference to usr/libs32 is the wrong place for
Karmic and AMD64.
