Public bug reported:

I have recently purchased a new Asus M2V motherboard (socket AM2) and a
new socket AM2 Athlon64 X2 4200+. I have been disapointed to find that
the "sata_via" kernel module in Dapper does not recognise the included
VT8237A southbridge and as such it can not see my SATA hard disk. My old
motherboard featured the first revision of this chipset, VT8237, which
worked perfectly in Dapper. I briefly tried Edgy and found that the
sata_via driver detects the SATA drive fine, but it is not practical to
run Edgy as it is still very early in development and too buggy. It
would be useful if support for the VT8237A southbridges SATA controller
could be backported to Dapper Drake, otherwise a lot of people with new
machines will be totally unable to use Ubuntu until October when Edgy is
released.

** Summary changed:

- sata_via kernel module lacks support for VIA VT8237A sothbridge SATA in Dapper
