Thank you for your bug. I doubt that's a gnome-session bug, could you
log with gdm but to some other environment (wmaker, xfce, kde, ...) and
try to do the same thing. I didn't know that people were stil using
xcompmgr, what is that useful for? If you want to some composite manager
maybe try compiz. Could you describe how to set xcompmgr up, that would
be useful to maybe fix the session dialog not displayed. Not that you
can use gnome-session-save to logout, not need to kill X the way you do
