Hello, i have the same problem that you described. I don't know when it appeared (probably in the last month), since i don't create folder in thunderbird everyday.
I run Kubuntu 8.04 (kernel 2.6.24-24-generic) Thunderbird version is 2.0.0.23 (but i noticed the problem in version 2.0.0.22 and the update didn't change anything). I tried the following without any success : 1. delete .msf files in all .mozilla-thunderbird subfolders. 2. moved my profile to another place, then started from a totally new profile... no way ! 3. apt-get remove thunderbird, apt-get clean, apt-get install thunderbird and trying the new install on empty profile... useless...
