I can reproduce this bug in MySQL 5.0.24a-9ubuntu2.4 (edgy) It appears to have been fixed in MySQL 5.0.38-0ubuntu1 (feisty)
Do note that even affected MySQL versions can detect/handle ERROR 1436.
