The same could be said about any other file in the system. That's why
there are backup programs, so that you do not need to duplicate this
functionality to a multitude of editors, and do not clutter the disk
with lots of copies.
Please use a proper backup solution for things like this. An interesting
way I use myself is to put /etc/ under revision control, that makes it
very handy to retain history.
