Okay. The latest ufraw has support for 450D but not 500D. The latest dcraw has support for 500D, but ufraw hasn't taken in those changes yet.
I managed to realize that ufraw doesn't use the dcraw binary (but duplicates dcraw code), download the sources, find the affected code, patch it, build it and everything took about 15 minutes.
