Bruce, just ran what you suggested. But it does not crash the X server, only X 
session. I ran it from an gnome session within an xterm session:
gnome-session > gnome-session.log 2>&1
Indeed, gnome-session crashed, leaving xterm and X server running. (However, 
couldn't get the focus back to xterm.) Here's the log.
