Right... I've had a quick look at this (via packages.ubuntu.com).

Workaround: install libxine1-ffmpeg.

Fix: build with --with-logo-format=image, or build-conflict with
libxine1-ffmpeg.

(gxine's configure script prefers the MPEG version of its logo over the
JPEG version; presumably, libxine1-ffmpeg was present at build time,
which would be enough to cause the MPEG version to be used.)
