Can you set it in either gnome prefferences or in kdes system config?
and does it work after making thunderbird default mail client. I am not
seeing this as a bug but more as a failure to set up default mail client
in your Desktop Enviornment. FF cant tell you what client you want to
use, you have to tell firefox/system what mail client you want to use.
Im closing this bug as it seems its not firefox causing the issue.
