Hi Travis, Thanks for the help. glxgears "works" in the current mode I'm using, i.e. with indirect rendering set, although it's not fast at all: prompt > glxgears No kernel support for execution fencing, disabling texture tiling 181 frames in 5.0 seconds = 36.181 FPS 293 frames in 5.0 seconds = 58.459 FPS 286 frames in 5.0 seconds = 57.143 FPS 282 frames in 5.0 seconds = 56.246 FPS 303 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.504 FPS
works much faster if I revert to metacity: Debug > glxgears No kernel support for execution fencing, disabling texture tiling 2053 frames in 5.0 seconds = 410.518 FPS 2058 frames in 5.0 seconds = 411.581 FPS 2075 frames in 5.0 seconds = 414.926 FPS 2053 frames in 5.0 seconds = 410.574 FPS 2066 frames in 5.0 seconds = 413.187 FPS Obviously I can't test it with compiz running without the indirect rendering flag on, since I can't see any window on my desktop while in that mode. I don't know if I'm using kernel modesettings: I'm not familiar with this term. How do I check whether it's the case? One thing I forgot to mention: yesterday I upgraded the x server to the preview of the 2.8 drivers as per this web page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance I did that because the server was also hanging on me once in a while, usually when interacting with firefox.
