Could you confirm a few things for me: - what kind of machine is this? PC, Mac, emulated? virtual machine? etc. - how are you running the "sleep" and "kill" commands? from X? from a getty? from ssh? Could you run a "sleep" as before, and this time "cat /proc/PID/status" from another terminal and attach that.
