After downloading some updates (maybe coincidental), the wireless bug has become intermittent. It still happens regularly on 9.04 and never on the Dell OEM version, but about half the time 9.04 can now make a perfect connection.
At other times ping times to www.google.com (which are usually about 30 ms) rise intermittently to 70-80 seconds (not milliseconds), but there's no packet loss. The effect on web browsing is that everything often freezes. It seems to be a semi-permanent thing, in that either it's like that, and even disconnecting and reconnecting doesn't cure it, or it's perfect and stays perfect.
