You need to prevent pulseaudio from automatically loading whenever you
load an ALSA application. The best way to do this is the following:
1. If you don't already have a .pulse directory in your home directory, create
it.
2. Open .pulse/client.conf in an editor. The file may not exist, so saving it
in the editor will create it.
3. Add the text in quotes. "autospawn = no"
4. Save the file.
Now whenever you load an ALSA application such as speech-dispatcher,
pulseaudio should not automatically get loaded.
Finally, if you want to kill pulseaudio, "pulseaudio -k" should do the
trick.
