Sorry, but I'm not sure this bug report is very constructive. Since you
acknowledge it's not our fault, please don't rant about free software
being more costly than proprietary ones. Bug reports should be about
precise issues, which is not really the case here. Your feature request
is far too broad to be useful to us: I personally know that if I had
more time, I should much improve the shares-admin tool. No need for
reports to know that.
I'm just going to answer some of your concerns, though.
- The shares tool is not shown in System->Administration because it's been
disabled by default. We (or some of us) have found that using the
nautilus-share tool that you can show by right-clicking on a file would bring
as many features, while being easier to use. So that's a policy decision.
- Adding options would be nice, we're aware of that need, but nobody has found
time to do so, since other things must have a higher priority. But that will
eventually happen, don't worry. :-)
- Our documentation is very poor, even useless, in that program (as opposed to
the Ubuntu Help Center). I'm even considering removing it entirely so that
users and translators don't lose their time. Anyways, GNOME is currently
starting a completely new documentation project, which should eventually fix
that problem too.
So I'm going to close this bug because it won't help me nor any other
developer to improve things. I hope you'll still be using Ubuntu, or
will come back to it, when things have improve (they will!). In the
meantime, I'd advise you to use gnome-user-share, which works using
WebDAV, but provides the options you're looking for (password...). Or
you can use command line tools, which are less friendly but very
powerful if you're willing to learn how they work. Thanks for caring
about Ubuntu!
