Rajeev just to be sure what version your using of both pulseaudio and ubuntu can you post the ouput of:
aptitude show pulseaudio uname -r cat /etc/*release What results do you get when you boot from a LIVE CD, does your sound work without issues in the LIVE CD environment? Also if you could include some info as to what Hardware you are running into this issue with that would help a lot!
