I re-installed Karmic Alpha 4 with updates after formatting to FAT32,
then to ext4 and Grub 2. I haven't had any reoccurrence of the bug. All
programs previously installed were restored from my-packages.
There is still no splash on boot or shutdown - just a black screen until
login. As the bug affects other users; 416979 and possibly 414034, I am
not marking this bug as invalid yet.
