Today I found time for a few tests. Rebooting back to Jaunty from Karmic seems to have had the effect you describe. I could resolve the issue by shutting down and then booting into the new kernel. After that rebooting the same kernel seems to work. Could it be, that you face something similar? Have you tried to shutdown and reboot into a new kernel?
