Grrr, After fighting with apport retracing service to make sure I had the latest updates on my live image prior to installing, I discovered that the real issue is that my SSD in my Acer Aspire One (Intel Z-P230 8G SSD) has indeed failed. It fails on i/o access even writing zeros to the drive with dd.
Sigh.
