So my babble about $PATH and cron was clearly rubbish, sorry.  However,
the following might be more relevant:

ja...@druzhnaya:/etc/cron.d$ grep PATH /usr/sbin/pg_maintenance -B1
# untaint environment
$ENV{'PATH'} = '';
