Same problem here. Until a couple days ago, my Thinkpad T400 woke up from sleep without a hitch. Then. the symptoms that katsudon describes appeared. I also noticed characters in Firefox becoming corrupted a few seconds after wake-up. The complete freeze can be prevented by switching to a TTY and restarting KDM fast enough. I wouldn't call this a viable workaround, though...
