Public bug reported:

with the newest karmic kernels the system does not power off.
The power off process reaches the "waiting all remaining processes to stop...."
after this the screen goes black, I can alt+Fxx but
all the consoles are dead and no actual shutdown ever happens. I suspect that
the all FS-ses are still mounted cause when I power cycle a fsck is always
required. The system is upgraded to the latest soft/kernel as of yesterday.
Only hardware difference from the stock
Pavilion are the 2x nvidia nvs 290 video-cards installed. I'm using the latest
nvidia-glx drivers that karmic provides.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
