The current karmic gdm still has hal code, and configure.ac depends on
it. For once this is the code to determine the current keyboard layout
(Ubuntu/Fedora patch), and also
http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gdm/tree/daemon/gdm-local-display-factory.c .
