seasoned_geek, the USB stuff IS sorted out. Please update your system.
The package cups 1.4.0-3 contains both the fixes for the discovery of
USB printers and the fix of the USB backend hanging after printing a
job. You will be able to print perfectly with this release. If your
update does not catch this CUPS version, wait some hours until your
mirror picking up this version.
