Public bug reported:
1) Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 4
2) Unknown which package affected.
3) Ubuntu loads up to a usable desktop
4) Today I installed Karmic Koala using the Alpha 3 amd64 live cd.
I updated it to alpha 4 (sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get dist-
upgrade).
After restarting the computer, it loads up fine until I see the new
xsplash screen for a few seconds, the screen turns off for a few
seconds, and then I see the xsplash screen again, then the screen turns
off, and it keeps doing for an indefinite period of time.
Thinking that the problem was with xsplash, I booted into the recovery
console and removed it (sudo apt-get purge xsplash, this also removed
ubuntu-desktop).
The result was that it loaded fine until X tried to start. Then a blank
screen with a spinning cursor comes up, then screen goes turns off, and
it goes back and forth between the two states of being without end.
Being out of ideas, I re-entered the recovery console and reinstalled
ubuntu-desktop. The behaviour first described now resumes.
TL;DR: Updating to alpha 4 has completely borked ubuntu on my machine.
