I experienced this bug always with Ubuntu since Dapper 6.06. The solution was to use the ATI proprietary driver: ati driver version 9.1 worked very reliable and I could use my computer several months without shutting down just suspend. It seems that the open source driver can not handle properly the X700 ati onboard chipset. But ATI proprietary driver for Karmik does not work (exist). Chears, Zoltan
