I have also aspire 5520. If I press / choose shutdown, and after press Ctrl+F7, usually the last message on screen is "halt: Unable to iterate IDE devices: No such files or directory". That means that problem is bug 298402 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298402 ).
