This may be the same. I just did a fresh install from USB of AMD64 karmic alpha 5 alternate installer to a blank hard drive. All seemed to go well until the install completed and it rebooted. Got to GDM screen, there was an odd horizontal, smeared "reflection" of the animated "I'm busy" icon, but otherwise looked good. Login, it seems to accept it and screen goes black for a few seconds, then returns to GDM. After having this happen once or twice I thought to switch to a console to get X out of the loop, and at that point the machine (or at least the display) locked up (displaying GDM login with maybe 1/4" of corrupted video across the top of the screen). No further investigation is planned, since grub2 never gives me a chance to make any changes to the boot to avoid getting X started (bug report filed). :-(
This is an Athlon X2 5600+ in an Asus M3A78-EM with 4G of ECC RAM that's been perfectly happy for the last half year running Ibex (64 bit) and more recently Ibex upgraded to Jaunty (32 bit, because it was swapped into what had been a 32-bit only system). So it's likely something in the twisty mess of X and DRI and the "HD3100" integrated video (780G chipset) that's causing this. -- [rv620] Karmic Alpha 5 resets the GPU repeatedly during bootup, then freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/424712 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
