I don't think its nvidia or M860TU specific because I have had plenty of
distributions (openSUSE, ArchLinux, etc) detect the AC adapter
correctly. It seems highly dependent on weather or not the AC adapter
module is built into the kernel or is modular. Also, it seems to be
related to timing - for example, on the latest release of ArchLinux
(2009.08 x86_64), the same problem arises even with the AC adapter
compiled as a module (default in ArchLinux). However if I blacklist the
ac adapter on startup and load it using modprobe in rc.local (roughly
init 5), there are no problems whatsoever - the entire ACPI system
functions correctly (no errors or warnings).

So far this seems to point to the problem being mainly kernel based, but
I'm not sure what needs to be changed in terms of the timing issue...
