Hi I had followed a set of directions for getting rid of the existing sound app/setting pulsr in order to install something else without realizing that the directions where for the 8.0x versions of Ubuntu. I have since managed to restore the sound and set up Skype to ignore the sound system and to instead utilize the USB headphones. So at the moment everything is working. Fingers crossed. Thanks.
