This bug shows itself at my place if I make any modifications to the
automagic generated kernels. After a modification (for example removing
the kernel from the title) a subsequent "sudo update-grub" seems to
work, but fails to update the kernel list.

Parker's solution (#41) works, but it is also possible to force the
recreation of the kernel list by changing an automagic option in
menu.lst. After this you will get the option to install the package
maintainer's version. This solution keeps all your settings (except the
one you changed). (I cannot change updatedefaultentry to true. It gives
"expr: non-numeric argument". I don't know what is should do, but do you
all people have this?)

parker's 'problem' with the hidden menu is an option in menu.lst called
"hiddenmenu". Commenting that out solves his problem.
