This problem had a simple solution -- update the alsa driver. I am using a special alsa driver that is proprietary to a commercial company that supplies a software driver for a particular card in my computer. While I had been manually updating that card's driver with each kernel update, I didn't realize that, eventually, it might be necessary to update the proprietary alsa driver as well. This was apparently necessary with the advent of kernel -14. With a proprietary alsa driver, Ubuntu's update manager naturally can't help. Manually updating the proprietary alsa driver solved the problem.
