Well, I've SOLVED my problems with firefox. Turns out acroread and the plugin connections had evaporated. Don't know why. Maybe one of the updates. Certainly I've done nothing to fiddle. However, there was a firefox update recently, and ....
I could get bad behaviour trying to look at a local pdf file, including the error msgs. Then found no acroread. Installing acroread, acroread- plugins and mozilla-acroread fixed things. Will have to do the plugins for other browsers too. Perhaps others can check if this is their problem.
