I spoke with Scott about this and aufs seemingly nukes any information
that would allow us to draw a connection between / and a block device in
the live environment.

We could take the simple approach of watching out for devices mounted on
/cdrom, but that strikes me as being too broad.  Still, it's probably
worth the risk, given how poorly writing to the block device containing
the live filesystem will turn out.
