Okay, I found a solution that seems to work for me. (I will report back
here if it fails, but so far so good.)

An updated version of the open source drivers for the card in my laptop
works pretty good. There are no weird artifacts, the fan turns off when
it is not cooling, and, well, it seems to Just Work. (I am only looking
at 2D stuff, I installed Extreme Tux Racer to see how the 3D is and got
something like 4 frames per second - it's basically a slideshow.)

Using the PPA for Tormod Volden did seem to install a bunch of other
gorp. I don't know if this is good or bad, so it may be worth it to try
to install only the xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd package. I noticed that
the package for Karmic is actually one version later, so maybe the best
thing is to try that:
