I switched to deadline on the fly during a file transfer to USB and noticed an immediate difference in the system responsiveness, though the operations didn't seem to change their data rate, the screen started updating and the system was much more usable. Definitely closer to what I'd expect from a quad-core machine with 4 GB of RAM...
