This is very odd.

... As of today I can now access websites via my browser. Up until now I
had been adding to my hosts file the IPs of the sites (such as the
ubuntu forum, and launchpad) I needed to access for resolving this bug.
So I have been able to access those sites. But today I discovered I can
now access any site. Also Synaptic was able to connect to the
repositories.

I still can't ping anything that's not in the hosts file.

Synaptic is able to access the net also. It seems all net access has
been restored, although I have no idea why or how. Domain resolution for
pinging is not restored though. It just sits there for a long long time.
Not sure how long, as I end up break out of it after a while.

I have no idea what brought about this change. I had not modified
anything that I am aware of.
