My problem seems to be with apt-get and dpkg. I have a SATA II drive and I cannot download and install or upgrade any packages - they give var/cache/apt/archives errors and even if I manage to download the .deb file successfully the installer will throw up errors. Copying files, and install from CD works just fine - it is the download and update that causes the errors.
