Public bug reported:
This is a regression from Kubuntu 9.04, KDE 4.2.2, to Kubuntu 9.10, KDE 4.3.0.
I have Windows XP one one Hard Drive and Kubuntu on another, and I change
boots through BIOS start-up. When I booted from Kubuntu 9.04, KDE 4.3.0
Dolphin used to
recognize the Windows XP HDD, and I could see the files and folders and even
transfer these over to the Kubuntu HDD. Then when I upgraded to Kubuntu 9.10
from 9.04 and the KDE interface also upgraded from 4.2.2 to 4.3.0, the Windows
XP
HDD is still visible in Dolphin but none of the files and folders are. There
is an error message that is useless, because when I searched it on the web it
shows with a pile of unrelated problems. I followed all of the /etc/fstab line
change recommendations but no solution.
The KDE people indicate that this is a Kubuntu problem or a KDE problem.
I tried to isolate the problem by a process of elimination as I have two
live CDs one with 9.10 and 4.3.0 and one with 9.04 and 4.2.2. The 9.04
with 4.2.2 recognizes the Windows XP HDD and shows and copies the files
and folders just like it used to. So this is not an install problem it
is a version functionality regression problem either with Kubuntu as the
KDE group indicates.
This problem is not with a partition it is a completely separate Hard
Drive. The only combinations that I have are live CDs with 9.04 and
4.2.2 which works, and 9.10 and 4.3.0 which doesn't work. I don't have
any Live copy of 9.10 and 4.2.2, because if I did, then by elimination I
could figure out whether the problem was soley Kubuntu 9.10 or a
combination problem of 9.10 and 4.3.0. This problem started some while
ago, and I figured that it would get caught on subsequent updates, there
have been 4 or 5 since both to KDE and Kubuntu and the problem is still
the same. So then I am guessing that no one is aware of this regression
problem.
