I would pretty-much agree with everything the reporter of this bug has said. There are two points I'd like to raise as being relevant:
1. There is a problem with drivers in general, not just printers. That's why the kernel dev team has offered to develop drivers for free: http://www.kroah.com/log/2007/01/29/#free_drivers 2. Is the promise of free driver writing from the kernel team applicable to printer drivers (given that they're not part of the kernel)? So the problem is known and work is being done to fix it. This is Mark Shuttleworths number 2 challenge facing widespread GNU+Linux adoption.
