Just had the same experience on a new Jaunty install on a PPC. Trying to navigate in the recovery menu gives me ^[[B and ^[[A characters on the screen. Pressing enter just writes the current menu selection on the left of the screen, tabbing to <Ok> does something similar. Finally, pressing Ctrl-C just exits the menu with no drop to a menu. Eventually booted from CD, mounted disk, chroot'ed and changed the password.
