I just tried Karmic again and after manually running fsck on all ext4
volumes I can know reliably boot into gdm. I initially dropped into a
console shell but as I said running fsck on all ext4 volumes enabled gdm
boot.

It's not pretty, and there are a lot of errors reported, but I installed
all my normal applications and even compiled my custom version of wine
and can run all my Linux applications, and windows games, much faster
than on Jaunty.

Fantastic work devs, thank you.
