EdDantes: I guess you can re-enable GDM on start typing
sudo update-rc.d defaults gdm

If that does not work, do
sudo rm  /etc/rc?.d/S*gdm
and retry the first step. 

BTW, I think the error message you pointed has no link with your
problem.
