I had a similar problem with karmic's amd64 version of oowriter (1:3.1.1-1ubuntu2), except that there was no error message at all when I ran oowriter from the command line. Running it from openoffice-org or nautilus gave the error 'openoffice crashed... the following files will be recovered' with a blank list of documents to be recovered. Removing ~/.openoffice.org had no effect whatsoever.
Then I tried an strace on oowriter and it ran just fine: and subsequently it works again from the command line, from nautilus...
