I had a similar problem with a Lenovo Ideapad Y530 but executed at each startup:
# Establih HIBERNATE to disk ============================
  echo shutdown > /sys/power/disk
# ====================
No problems with hibernate since BUT suspend never fully worked, s2 both partly
works but I have to power off, thus executing only hibernate.

Using Ubu-9.04 and 9.10 on Lenovo

Note, no problems with Thinkpad T42.and Ubu-9.04
